Chioma Toplis said, “It is so painful when all his struggles were starting paying off, his life was cut short. What a waste. I have worked with Clems in some movie scenes, during his upcoming days. The news of his death is still very shocking to me."

It's always such a great loss when one loses his/her mother no matter how old the person is/was. For most people this is so, at least i know cos i am one of them.
Truth is that Nollywood's controversial actress, Tonto Dike, who is always in the news for either good or bad (though mostly bad), did a very surprising thing today.
The actress who lost her mother on 23 October many yeas ago at a very young age remembered her late mum in a special way. She did not write any messy note or cursed anyone today. Not less than eighty shops have been affected by a fire incidence that took place at the New Layout Market Borokiri, in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

The Chairman of the New Layout Market, Robinson Jack, who confirmed this, said that over eighty stores were affected by a fire inside that occurred at the market on Tuesday evening.

Mr. Jack told newsmen that the fire which started around 6:30 pm affected two blocks in the market and destroyed goods worth millions of naira.

He said the fire lasted about two hours and was finally brought under control by men of the fire service.

Robinson said the cause of the fire was yet unknown but that some security guards who were on duty noted that the fire started shortly after power suppply was restored in the market.

He also made a call to the state government and all concerned Nigerians to come to the rescue of those affected.

The State Commissioner for Special Duties, Dickson Umunakwe, as at the time of filing this report was yet to reply to calls made to him concerning the fire incidence.

Destiny Child's Kelly Rowland has lost her mother, Doris Rowland, to the cold hands of death. The mother had been ill for sometime but passed on yesterday, December 2, 2014.
She died just weeks after Kelly gave birth to her son.
Kelly was one of the defunct Destiny Child music group that included Beyonce, Kelly and Michel. She is yet to comment on her mum's death. Probably devastated by the news. Take heart dear, our prayers are with you.

Well, well, well. This might sound as bad news for all recent producers of handwash and hand sanitisers as what you are about to read may baffle you.

We all know that with the scare of the dreaded Ebola Virus Disease (EVD)'s arrival into the country, all manner of hand sanitisers flooded the Nigerian market. First, thank God we are done with that nightmare and it is not coming back in Jesus name, amen.

While many people have imbibed the habit of proper hygiene with emphasis on hand washing and sanitizing, many are yet to let go of their hand sanitisers.

The unfortunate thing here is that while it is good to use hand sanitisers, one does not know which make is the real one, and many of them in the market are of low quality with the poorest of ingredients that poses as a threat to the user.

I found an interesting article from the Tribune newspaper and decided to bring it to your notice, read it after the cut…

Soaps and other cleansing agents have been around for quite a long time. Ancient documents have shown that right from as far back as 1500 B.C., Egyptians combined animal and vegetable oils with alkaline salts to form a soap-like substance used for treating skin diseases, as well as for washing. Nowadays, soaps have gone beyond being used for simply washing and are now being used for several processes which include disinfection, decontamination, antisepsis/sanitisation and sterilisation. Animal and vegetable oils with alkaline salts have now been replaced with chemical ingredients in various forms with distinct formulations, most of which are touted to have antibacterial properties. Topmost on the list of these ingredients are Triclosan, trichlorocarbamide and p-chloro-m-xylenol (PCMX/chloroxylenol).

With the flooding of the market with several antibacterial products, especially medicated soaps and washes, and campaigns for their use, many believe that an antimicrobial potion of soaps is effective at preventing communicable diseases. This may be so as it has been discovered that scrubbing body or hands, particularly with soaps, is the first line of defence against bacteria and other pathogens that can cause colds, the flu, skin infections and even deadly communicable diseases. However, researchers have now drawn attention to the fact that too much of it can have the opposite effect - spreading diseases/infections instead of preventing them.

Several studies have shown that in the long run, the overutilisation of medicated/antibacterial soaps and washes might result in antimicrobial resistance and even rendering an individual more vulnerable to microbial attacks such as opportunistic skin infections.

A microbiologist, Mr. Taiwo Ajayi, corroborates this stance, saying, “Although these antibacterial soaps are effective against bacterial microorganisms, the fact remains that simply washing thoroughly with plain soap alone is enough to reduce bacteria and even some viruses. One thing we need to understand about bacteria is that with time, they can develop resistance. That is why we keep saying antibiotics should not be abused, because the microorganism will develop resistance and the drug won’t work. The same can happen with antibacterial soaps and washes.”

Moreover, long exposure to such soaps and washes depletes the body of ‘good’ bacteria which is part of a normal body’s flora.

Beyond bacteria mutating and resulting in antibacterial products being ineffective, there are fresh concerns that some of these antibacterial components, especially triclosan, may be detrimental to health.

A recent study suggests that long-term exposure to triclosan, commonly found in liquid hand soap, shampoo and other personal hygiene products, could cause cancer and liver fibrosis. This ingredient, which can also be found in some toothpastes, deodorants and various cosmetics, slows or prevents the growth of bacteria, fungi or mildew.  The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, showed that the research team exposed a group of mice to triclosan for six months - the equivalent to 18 years in humans - and compared their health with that of a group of mice not exposed to the agent.

Results of the analysis revealed that mice exposed to triclosan had significantly poorer liver health and function than those not exposed to the agent. Additionally, the exposed mice were more susceptible to tumour development in the liver, and their tumours were more frequent and larger than those of unexposed mice.

The researchers stated that triclosan produced these effects in mice by disrupting the function of the Constitutive Androstane Receptor (CAR) - a protein that clears foreign chemicals from the body. This protein is also present in humans.

Disruption to CAR causes the proliferation of liver cells, which leads to fibrosis - the development of excess tissue. If this process is repeated - triggered by long-term triclosan exposure - it can lead to tumour development.

Previous studies have revealed that triclosan alters hormone regulation in animals and might be harmful to the immune system.

In view of this, what is the way forward? “Using bland soap and running water is enough to protect the skin. What people should focus on is learning the proper way of washing.  Antibacterial soaps are not for everybody to use but are supposed to be for people with low immunity or those who have some kind of skin infections and this should used based on the recommendation of a dermatologist.” Mr Ajayi says.

The three-storey building secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State was blown up on Sunday, by what is suspected to be dynamite.

Chairman of APC in the in the local government, Christian Asifamaka, told newsmen at the scene of the incident that the explosion, which occurred at about 3.15am, brought down the walls of the party secretariat, located at Abam-Ama community of Okrika, and that the worst hit was the chairman’s office.

Destroyed in the explosion according to Asifamaka were official documents of the APC as well as properties belonging to the party, and worth over N5million were destroyed.

When contacted, the state police public relations officer (PPRO), Ahmad Muhammad, confirmed the attack, saying the command had launched investigation into the incident to bring those behind the ugly act to book.

Reacting to the development, the governorship candidate of APC in the state, Dr Dakuku Peterside, condemned the act, and expressed the hope that the Nigeria Police and other security agencies would assist in arresting those behind the act.

Peterside, who made the condemnation while speaking to newsmen in Okrika, shortly after assessing the level of damage caused by the explosion, accused members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the area of being responsible for the ugly act.

He said that members and supporters of the PDP in the state have initiated a particular pattern of meting out violence to the people of the state, especially members of the APC.

Peterside said, “This development is very said and it is unfortunate that some persons in the society have decided to choose this path. If you have noticed, there has been a pattern of violence lately. On the 6th day of January, when we had our presidential rally at the Adokiye Amesiemeka Stadium, we would have noted that some of our people who were coming from Abonnema, Degema, Asari-Toru axis were attacked around Sa-Ama junction.”

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mohammadu Buhari, has vowed to disown anybody or group that carries out physical or verbal attack on members of other political parties.

Buhari said this at the inauguration of the APC campaign council in Abuja on Monday.

He called on members of his party and supporters nationwide to vote peacefully and embark on issue-based campaign rather than involving in physical or verbal attack on their opponents.

“I am calling on all well-wishers within and outside the party not to insult any other aspirant or party leaders on my behalf”, Buhari said.

In his speech, the Director General of the APC presidential campaign organisation and the Governor of Rivers State, Rt. Hon Chibuike Amaechi, described the 2015 general elections as the best opportunity for Nigerians to have change over bad government.

“We can’t afford to lose it. We cannot also afford to disagree on any issue. The only issue we can afford to disagree on is that we must not make a mistake. We must agree that President Goodluck Jonathan and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have had their cup filled by themselves and that the society wants them out.” Amaechi said.

The All Progressives Congress (APC), in Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers State, said fear has now engulfed the people of the area following explosion that rocked the APC headquarters in Ngo Town. 
This is barely one week after some parts of the party's secretariat in Okrika, Rivers State was burnt down.

The APC Chairman of Ward one in the area, Amos Okoni, told newsmen that the people were now living in fear.

He called on security operatives to come to their aid.

“When this incident happened I suspected Nyesom Wike. I want the government to come to our aid because we are no more safe here. We don’t know what may happen within the night”.

I am still shocked to my marrow to learn of Nollywood veteran actors’ death- Muna Obiekwe. Many did not even know he was sick. I for one did not know that he was down with kidney disease.

Well, the sad news is that he died on Sunday, January 18, at around 4:15 in an undisclosed hospital in Lagos after battling with the deadly disease.

He was said to have been rushed to the hospital after collapsing at home, but was confirmed dead on reaching the hospital.

Muna Obiekwe was said to have needed money for his treatment, and a fellow colleague of his, Nollywood actress Ify Okeke have gone on instagram to accuse Muna’s colleagues in the movie industry who knew about his ailment of not reaching out to him.

She wrote-

"I truly hate to be a harbinger of bad news but I want to confirm that Muna Obiekwe is dead! And am so angry! Yes not just because we lost another great talent but because in this industry we are not our brothers keeper. Yes, Muna might have wanted or lived a private life but people knew he was sick, people knew his health condition and yet what did they do? Some tried but if they had cried out to the world Muna might have gotten help. We are just colleagues No real friends! Rest In Peace Muna.

The painful thing is that Muna is gone. Whatever anybody could have done and did not do is no longer important as nothing can bring him back. Above picture is him on dialysis.

The Rivers State Government has confirmed the outbreak of Avian Influenza, commonly known as bird-flu in the state.

This was confirmed by the Rivers State Commissioner for Agriculture, Emmanuel Chinda.

He said samples taken from some farms in Rivers State for a laboratory test confirmed proved positive.

Nigeria has been going through bird flu awareness which has been confirmed to be in Lagos, and recently, though still unconfirmed, suspected to be in Delta State.

One of the most common sexual positions has also been dubbed the most dangerous by a group of scientists. The ‘woman-on-top’ position during intercourse was deemed responsible for half of all penile fractures sustained during sex in cases recorded at three hospitals, according to researchers in Brazil.

Scientists say this may be because the woman controls the penis with her entire body weight landing on it and is unable to interrupt it when it suffers a ‘wrong way penetration’. The harm is usually minor for her and with no pain - but major in the penis.

Positions involving the woman on all fours was involved in 29 per cent of fractures. Meanwhile, the safest position in the bedroom was revealed as the man-on-top or ‘missionary position’.
The authors examined the cases of the 44 men who attended three hospitals in the city of Campinas, Brazil, with a suspected fractured penis over a thirteen year period. Forty-two of the cases were confirmed by doctors.

Twenty-eight fractures were sustained during heterosexual sex, four during homosexual sex, six after “penis manipulation” and four in circumstances which remain unclear.

Half of the patients described hearing an audible crack and feeling pain after the incident. Most attended hospital within the next five or six hours.

The authors noted that the injury is relatively uncommon and can cause embarrassment among those who do suffer a fractured penis, meaning they often put off seeking medical treatment.
The paper concluded: "Our study supports the fact that sexual intercourse with 'woman on top' is the potentially riskiest sexual position related to penile fracture.

"When the man is controlling the movement, he has better chances of stopping the penetration energy in response to the pain related to the penis harm, minimising it."

The Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Amaechi has insisted that the state would not allow the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in the state to use the Adokiye Amesiamaka Stadium for their rally.

Amaechi made the statement during the campaign rally of the APC governorship candidate, Dakuku Peterside in Etche.

 The governor also threatened to use youths to counter the antics of the PDP.

“We will not give them, if they try, we will match our own youths. The simple fact is that there is law and order. If the president wants to speak at the stadium, he knows that there is law and order. PDP government denied us Eagle Square, and we had to go and campaign in a military stadium in Abuja. Then we say to them we are working at the stadium, go and use the Elekahia stadium", the governor said.

He also advised PDP to make the campaign for next month’s election an issue-based campaign instead of trying to malign the person of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd.)

The information concerning the burial date for the late Nollywood actor, Muna Obiekwe who died as a result of kidney failure has been announced by the chairperson of Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Ibinabo Fiberesima.
Candle night procession to hold February 1st 2015. Meeting point at Marsha, Roundabout, Surulere by 4pm. Procession from there to Ojez stadium.

All persons attending are advised to dress in white, while T-shirts would be provided at the venue. The burial will take place on 3rd February, at Umudioka in Anambra state.

Meanwhile, that is the picture of Muna in the car after he fell and gave up the ghost.

Chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State have raised alarm over what they described as sustained harassment, intimidation and attacks on members of the APC by the Nigerian Police, particularly men of the police Division in Ikwerre Local Government Area.

The Chieftains at a press conference in Port Harcourt, the state capital, said more than ten members of the APC in the area have either been arrested or detained by the police for no reason since the last one month.

They also alleged that campaign materials of the party have constantly been destroyed in the area.

One of the chieftains in the area and Rivers State Commissioner for Lands and Survey, Eze Monye Ezekiel Amadi, told journalists that the APC has lost one of its members in Ikwerre as a result of the police against the party.

“We have called you here to pour out our sorrows to you in case you can help us prevail on the police to stop their attack on us.

“What we find unaccepting is their political servitude to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)”, Amadi said.

He also called on the Nigerian Police and the police in Ikwerre Local Government Area to show neutrality in the coming election.

He said: “We will also like to let you gentlemen of the press to know that, though our hearts may be heavy and our sorrows many, nevertheless, we shall continue to refuse to be intimidated. We have our right to freedom of association and we are firm about exercising it. Even if we have to lay down our lives for it.

“However, we didn’t say that those who commit offences should go unpunished but what we ask is that the police in our local government should be neutral and abate the unnecessary cruelty on innocent APC members. A partisan police is not a requirement for true democracy. Leadership is not about muscles, is about getting along with people”, Amadi added.

Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi, said President Goodluck Jonathan is not prepared to ensure free, fair elections next month.

The governor said this in reaction to the deployment of soldiers to take over the Adokiye Amiesiemaka stadium following the insistence of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to host its presidential rally in the stadium.

Amaechi said it was unfortunate that the president was preaching one thing and doing another.

He said if the president was true to having free and fair election that he needed not use the military to forcefully takeover state owned property.

He explained that the Rivers State Government provided the Liberation stadium for the PDP to host its political rally because work was ongoing at the Adokiye Amiesiemake Stadium and wondered why the PDP led government of President Goodluck Jonathan would insist on using the stadium that was yet to be completed.
